Wikipedia

Walking

Walking (also known as ambulation) is one of the main gaits of terrestrial locomotion among legged animals. Walking is typically slower than running and other gaits. Walking is defined by an 'inverted pendulum' gait in which the body vaults over the stiff limb or limbs with each step. This applies regardless of the usable number of limbs—even arthropods, with six, eight, or more limbs, walk.

Examples of use of ambulation
1. Lord Elton, an ably–bottomed hereditary with some 76 years experience in ambulation, promises he will proclaim the importance of the Lords to an audience "particularly of the young ..." His fellow hereditary, Lord Grenfell, who turns out to have been married four times, besides writing novels entitled Margot and The Gazelle, thinks it worth pointing out, in his favour, that "My wife, now retired, will be with me here." And who can blame her?
